From Alto Adige to Sicily, the wines of Italy among the "Wines of The Year" 2023 by Decanter

gennaio 2024

In the list of "Wines of The Year" 2023 published in the January 2024 issue of the magazine, there are certainly labels from the Belpaese, selected, like the others, not only for their score (always 90/100 or above), but also according to market availability, pleasure, and so on. The wines of the year, in reality, do not award the tricolor: the sparkling wine of the year is Champagne Collection 243 NV by Louis Roederer, the white wine of the year is the Greek Thalassitis 2022 from Santorini by Gaia Wines, the red wine is the South African Cabernet Sauvignon Simonsberg-Stellenbosch 2019 by Kanonkop, the "offbeat" wine, meaning a bit out of the classic schemes, is once again the Greek Malagousia Achaia 2022 by Tetramythos from the Peloponnese, and the best value wine is the Spanish La Gitana Manzanilla En Rama by Hidalgo from Jerez. Nevertheless, Italian labels are certainly present among the "113 wines that scored 90 points or more overall, all of great pleasure, regardless of taste and your bank account," writes "Decanter." And so, in what is more of a list than a true ranking, among the best whites are must-haves like Rarity 2010 from Cantina di Terlano, a reference in Alto Adige, but also Tenuta del Conte, Diversamente Greco Bianco 2019 from Tenuta del Conte, from Cirò, in Calabria, and Anas-Cëtta Nascetta del Comune di Novello 2021 by Elvio Cogno, from the Langhe. Among the reds, on the other hand, at the top are Bolgheri Superiore 2019 by Grattamacco of the ColleMassari Group by Claudio Tipa, now a great classic, but also Barolo Parafada 2019 by Massolino, again from the Langhe, and the multi-awarded Flaccianello della Pieve 2013 by Fontodi, passing through Etna Calderara Sottana 2021 by Tenuta delle Terre Nere, and La Poja 2018 by Allegrini. And then again, Piemonte, with Grignolino d'Asti Monferace 2017 by Tenuta Santa Caterina, and Friuli Venezia Giulia, with the sweet Cràtis Verduzzo Friulano Colli Orientali 2019 by Scubla Roberto. If these are the best Italians overall, among the "highly recommended" wines (with ratings of 90 or 91 points), among the sparkling wines are mentioned Trentodoc Brut from the reference winery Ferrari, the peculiar Rebolium Brut Nature 2015 by Sinefinis, which originates between Brda and Collio, between Slovenia and Italy. Among the whites, there are great classics of their territories such as Soave Classico 2022 by Pieropan, Etna Bianco 2022 by Pietradolce, and Custoza Superiore Cà del Magro 2021 by Monte del Frà. Among the reds, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015 by Cà dei Maghi, Taurasi 2015 by Di Prisco from Irpinia, Gschleier Alte Reben Vernatsch 2021 by Cantina Girlan from Alto Adige, and Igt Toscana 2015 by Orma stand out. These, at least, are the verdicts of the all-female jury of "Decanter," formed by Tina Gellie, Content Manager Decanter, Master of Wine Anne Krebiehl, and Michaela Morris, wine writer and expert with a focus on Italy.
